Visual Networks Introduces Visual UpTime® SelectTM

Published on: 01 January 2004

New modular architecture for Performance Management Offerings
Visual Networks®, Inc. has announced Visual UpTime Select, a flexible suite of offerings, built upon Visual's award-winning platform, and designed to make it easier for companies to solve the IT infrastructure performance problems that degrade the delivery of business-critical applications.

Increased reliance on enterprise applications, such as customer relationship management (CRM), supply chain management and Web-based services, has put greater emphasis on the need for optimal performance and 24/7 availability of corporate IT networks. Visual Networks' new modular approach allows companies to buy what they need - when they need it - in order to effectively optimise and manage for applications delivery over their network infrastructure.

New Software Modules Offer Deployment Flexibility
Visual UpTime Select offers a flexible, software-based solution that companies can cost-effectively implement and incrementally enhance in step with the unique and changing needs of their own dynamic IT environments. This modularity makes it even more desirable for both existing and new customers, of all sizes, as they can purchase UpTime Select capabilities all at once, or one module at a time. Such flexibility is critical to meet the changing needs and budgets of today's IT organizations.

Visual UpTime Select includes new core capabilities, the unbundling of proven UpTime functionality into modular software components, and flexible purchasing options, including "Pay Per View" pricing. New core capabilities include a Service Summary application, Web-based management capabilities, active troubleshooting views, auto discovery of protocols, an enhanced reporting module and an integration module providing interfaces to third-party reporting packages and manager of manager platforms such as HP OpenView and Aprisma SPECTRUM.

Performance Visibility Has Never Been Easier
In addition to allowing enterprises to choose capabilities that fit specific management needs, Visual UpTime Select is also easy to implement. With an entry-level deployment, data is collected, analysis is performed and all performance events are displayed on the new web-based Service Summary application.

The new Service Summary application, gives enterprises a "fire tower" view into their applications infrastructure that they do not receive with ordinary SNMP-enabled network access devices. Its "at a glance" views of applications infrastructure include rolled up performance indicators that summarize hierarchical information from all managed sites, and provide detailed views that focus on specific areas. Overall, Service Summary provides a useful mechanism for understanding complex applications environments, but stands out because of its ability to launch the customer quickly and easily into other management modules. This intuitive set of summarized views drives very low operator training overhead. This, combined with the plug-and-play nature of the product, enables early results and rapid payback.

Visual UpTime Select - A Solution that Grows with You
Visual UpTime Select is designed to support an enterprise's growth and evolving needs. Its entry-level Service Summary application addresses key monitoring requirements on any IT budget, and as new technologies and applications are incorporated into the IT infrastructure, additional modules can be added to support them. This architectural approach, combined with Visual Networks' unique ability to place rich instrumentation at key boundary locations across the infrastructure, will enable the company to address newly emerging IT problems quickly with new modules. As IT organizations decide to add additional management capabilities to support application delivery, Visual UpTime Select will support those decisions with new modules.

"The proliferation of web-based applications and IP convergence has added additional complexity to today's networking environment. As a result, our customers are increasingly concerned about gaining visibility into the types of applications flowing across their network," said Larry Barker, president and CEO of Visual Networks. "With the introduction of UpTime Select, the enterprise is in the driver's seat, deciding how much performance management they need and when and how they want it delivered."
